Hammer and Wikan
The Challenge
Hammer & Wikan, a century-old retail institution in Petersburg, Alaska, needed their brand to honor their proud Norwegian heritage while positioning them as the market leader for their next hundred years. As their centennial celebration approached, they needed brand cohesion across three storefronts and corresponding digital presences—all while working within the practical constraints of existing wayfinding signage that would be cost-prohibitive to replace.
The Solution
We developed a comprehensive brand ecosystem that honored Hammer & Wikan's heritage while propelling them confidently into their second century. The new visual identity features a modern interpretation of the classic Viking longship paired with bold colors and contemporary typography. We strategically designed the branding system to integrate with existing wayfinding signage, eliminating costly infrastructure replacement. For the centennial, we created a complementary "100 Years Strong" anniversary logo suite. Our work included complete brand positioning, messaging and tagline development, copywriting for three websites, a detailed brand book, and promotional product designs.
The Spark Factor
A century-old institution entered their next hundred years with a brand as strong as their legacy.
